The Tlingit Herald - Orthodox Missionary - Orthodoxy Canada
As a missionary worker, Deacon Lev Puhalo (later Archbishop Lazar (Puhalo) served in several jurisdictions during a difficult and confusing period of the life of the Orthodox Church in North America.
He was deeply concerned about nurturing in the people both a good understanding of the Orthodox Christian Faith, and a good understanding about how to live life as an Orthodox Christian. He was concerned to nurture an Orthodox Christian mentality ("phronema" in Greek) which enables an Orthodox response to every detail of daily life.
The publication began while he was serving in south-western Alaska, particularly in the region of Sitka and Juneau, and particularly amongst the Tlingit People who were Orthodox Christians. During this period, the publication was called "The Tlingit Herald".
By 1980, when Deacon Lev had moved to the "Lower Mainland" of British Columbia, the name of the publication was adjusted to "Orthodox Missionary" and then to "Orthodoxy Canada".
