"The Canadian Orthodox Missionary" periodical was both a predecessor and successor to the periodical "The Tlingit Herald". "The Tlingit Herald" was produced by Deacon Lev Puhalo (later Archbishop Lazar (Puhalo)) while he was serving in the State of Alaska, USA. The former began to be produced after 1980, once he had moved to British Columbia, Canada.
In some ways, this publication was a successor to "The Canadian Orthodox Messenger" that was long-previously produced by Bishop Arseny (Chahovtsov), and effectively a sort of predecessor of "The Canadian Orthodox Messenger" that began to be produced again in 1989 by the Archdiocese of Canada.
Background
As described by Archbishop Lazar (Puhalo), in the 1970s, Dacon Lev Puhalo and Vasily Novakshonoff had decided to try to establish a Canadian Orthodox monastery and publishing house. They started publishing a journal called "Orthodox Canada". They did not have a printing press of their own, so they put together a small tabloid-form magazine, and they had it printed at the local newspaper office. The publication was interrupted briefly while Deacon Lev served a community of Tlingit First Nations in Southeast Alaska. During that period, they briefly published the magazine as "The Tlinget Herald." After their return to Canada, they resumed the publication of "Orthodox Canada" throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Eventually, the cost of publishing and mailing became too high for the (by this time) monks to continue.
In the 1980s, they established the Feast-day of the Holy Icon, "Theotokos, Joy of Canada". Up until that time, they had been located in the mountains south of Chilliwack, British Columbia (in the "Lower Mainland").
