==Prehistory==

The life and work of [https://orthodoxcanada.ca/Schema-Archimandrite_Ephraim_(Moraitis) Archimandrite Ephraim (Moraitis)] (who is considered by many to be holy) served as the preparation for the establishment of the [https://stkam.org/ Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Kosmas Aitolos], at [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton,_Ontario Bolton], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario Ontario], [https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada Canada]. It was because of Archimandrite Ephraim's love for the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Lord Lord] (developed over many years of experience as a [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Monk, monk]) that he received the blessing to undertake his missionary activities in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America North America]. This missionary activity came not of his own will, but rather from the blessing of the Lord through his superiors.

A [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Disciple disciple] of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Joseph_the_Hesychast Saint Joseph the Hesychast], Archimandrite Ephraim (Moraitis) had been given the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Virtues#Christian_virtues obedience] to revive the spiritual life of several [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monastery monasteries] on [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Mount_Athos Mount Athos], beginning with the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Philotheou_Monastery_(Athos) Philotheou Monastery], and then including the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xeropotamou_Monastery Xeropotamou], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstamonitou_Monastery Konstamonitou], and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karakallou_Monastery Karakallou Monasteries].

These monasteries continued under his spiritual guidance throughout his life.

Along with the monasteries on Mount Athos, there are several other monasteries in [https://www.britannica.com/place/Greece Greece] which were under Elder Ephraim’s spiritual guidance : [https://orthodoxcityhermit.com/2019/01/09/day-trip-to-the-monastery-of-saint-john-the-forerunner-at-serres-ii/ the Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serres Serres] ; [https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g644226-d9884606-Reviews-Panagia_Portarea-Portaria_Volos_Magnesia_Region_Thessaly.html the Monastery of Panagia the Directress] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaria Portaria] ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volos Volos]) ; [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volos the Monastery of the Archangel Michael], on the island of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thasos Thasos] (this monastery is a formal [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Metochion metochion] of the Philotheou Monastery).

In order to clarify how things developed, we repeat the following passage from [https://orthodoxcanada.ca/Schema-Archimandrite_Ephraim_(Moraitis) an article about Archimandrite Ephraim] :

In 1979, Elder Ephraim became ill, and he needed a surgery. Then his
spiritual children from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada Canada] offered to provide the surgery in Canada.
The Elder agreed. As soon as he arrived in Canada and he began his
examinations with the doctors, he started at the same time to hear
confessions, to admonish, and to teach [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expatriate expatriate] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeks Greeks]. His pastoral
activity was followed by invitations from the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States USA].

The surgery was successful. For more than a month, Elder Ephraim had stayed in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America North America], and he met various representatives of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_diaspora Greek community]. He came to understand clearly that the spiritual life amongst the families of Greek immigrants had been disrupted. People remained for a long time without the healing sacrament ([https://orthodoxwiki.org/Holy_Mysteries mystery]) of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Confession confession]. Some of them were burdened by grave sins. Some, totally unprepared, were receiving the Mystery of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Eucharist Holy Communion]. Some did not keep the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Canon_law canons of the Church], nor had they been properly taught what they are. They forgot the pious [https://orthodoxwiki.org/What_is_Orthodoxy Orthodox way of life], the [https://www.britannica.com/place/Greece/Cultural-institutions Greek national traditions] of their forebears, and they had become accustomed to a base (and sometimes deplorable) manner of living.

Father Ephraim (moved by love and compassion) decided to go to [https://www.britannica.com/place/North-America North America] more and more often. He first visited believers in parishes in Canada, particularly in [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/toronto?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg4jPzP7L5gIViZWzCh22HA56EAAYASAAEgLJGvD_BwE Toronto], [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/London London], [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/Vancouver Vancouver], and [https://thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/montreal?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxbP_-P7L5gIVjozICh2HRgC7EAAYASAAEgLS6_D_BwE Montréal]. London, [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/Ontario Ontario], served as an early focus for his spiritual and pastoral labours. Then he was invited to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States USA].

Ultimately, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monastic_community_of_Mount_Athos Council of the Holy Mountain] warned him that he could not continue in this manner, and that he must choose between the Holy Mountain and America.
The Elder Ephraim began to pray, and it was revealed to him that his place was to be in America. At the appeal of the Orthodox Faithful, he gave himself up to the holy mission of confession. He decided to move to the USA for the sake of the spiritual care of his flock, and for the revival of spiritual life in the Greek communities of North America.

At first, the Episcopal Synod of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_Orthodox_Archdiocese_of_America Archdiocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America] resisted this, and Elder Ephraim sought help from the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Russian_Orthodox_Church_Outside_Russia Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia]. As Elder Ephraim recalled : "I was received here with great love and genuine understanding".
A year later, under the personal patronage of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecumenical_Patriarch_of_Constantinople Patriarch of Constantinople], the problem of jurisdiction was resolved.

Elder Ephraim returned honourably to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and he was given the right to establish [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Monasticism monasteries] in [https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada Canada], and in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States USA]. Then, he proceeded in an orderly manner to establish 17 monasteries throughout [https://www.britannica.com/place/North-America North America], always after receiving permission from the Greek Orthodox [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Bishop bishop] of each area. Every monastery founded by Archimandrite Ephraim is accountable to the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Bishop#Archbishops_and_Metropolitans metropolitan] in whose territory the monastery is located.

==Foundation of the Holy Virgin Mary of Consolation Monastery, 1993==

The Holy Monastery of Saint Kosmas Aitolos (the first [https://goarchdiocese.ca/ Greek Orthodox] monastery in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario Ontario], [https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada Canada]) is under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Archdiocese_of_Canada_(Greek) Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada]. It was founded in 1993, under the care of [https://orthodoxcanada.ca/Archbishop_Sotirios_(Athanassoulas) Archbishop Sotirios (Athanassoulas)] of Canada (at that time, Metropolitan of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto Toronto], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada Canada]).

In fact, 2 women’s monasteries were founded in Canada at about the same time : the [https://www.monasterevmc.org/ Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Consolation], in Québec, near [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownsburg-Chatham Brownsburg] ; and [https://www.stkam.org/ Saint Kosmas of Aitolas Monastery], at [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton,_Ontario Bolton], near Toronto, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario Ontario]. A third monastery, this one for men, was founded near [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picton,_Ontario Picton], Ontario, at about the same time. However, this monastery was merged after a short time with the [https://orthodox-world.org/en/i/23536/united-states/michigan/smiths-creek/monastery/holy-trinity-orthodox-monastery Holy Trinity Orthodox Monastery], at [https://www.michigan.org/city/smiths-creek#?c=44.4299:-85.1166:6&tid=877&page=0&pagesize=20&pagetitle=Smiths%20Creek Smiths Creek], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan Michigan], USA.

The Holy Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Kosmas Aitolos was conceived, founded, and guided by Elder Ephraim, a spiritual offspring of the eminent [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Joseph_the_Hesychast Elder (Saint) Joseph the Hesychast]. After his long struggle in various [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Skete sketes] of the Holy Mountain of Athos, Elder Ephraim became [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Abbot abbot] of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Philotheou_Monastery_(Athos) Holy Monastery of Philotheou] ; from there, he established several women’s monasteries in [https://www.britannica.com/place/Greece Greece].

All the monasteries follow the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenobitic_monasticism Cenobitic way of monastic life]. “Cenobitic” is derived from the Greek word “Koinobios” which means “common way of life”. Therefore, the monastic community's life consists in common work, common meals, and common rest periods.

'''The first 2 nuns'''

There were 2 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nun nuns] (that is, female [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Monk monks]) who were under obedience to Elder Ephraim at the ancient and historical [https://www.saintjohns-monastery.gr/?lang=en Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner] of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serres Serres] in central [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia_(Greece) Macedonia] (of which he was the [http://orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/spiritualfather.aspx spiritual father]).

These nuns were given the blessing to emigrate to Canada, and to establish the monastery Ontario, Canada. Mother Alexia, the current [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Abbess abbess] of the monastery, was one of the 2 nuns.

Together, they established [https://www.stkam.org/ Saint Kosmas Aitolos Greek Orthodox Monastery], a religious organisation within the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_Orthodox_Archdiocese_of_Canada Greek Orthodox Metropolis] of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto Toronto], Canada (now the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada).

A large acreage was purchased in a rural area near Bolton, Ontario, which included a large home. The previous garage served as a first chapel until a correctly constructed chapel was possible to erect beside the building. There were many obstructions to be negotiated in the course of the establishment of this monastery in such a region inhabited by those who in general were not Orthodox Christians.

The presence of an [https://orthodoxwiki.org/What_is_Orthodoxy Orthodox Christian] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monastery monastery] is a valuable asset to any area because it provides not only an exemplary way of living the [https://www.oca.org/orthodoxy/the-orthodox-faith/spirituality/the-virtues Christian virtues], but it acts also as a window from the past for all those who wish to see [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Orthodox_Church Christianity] as it was practiced in the days of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Apostles Holy Apostles].

As is common with such monasteries, the nuns try to provide for their daily needs through their own work. This work is supplemented by the gifts of those who love them and support them in the manner that God blesses. For their part, the works of their hands gives rise to their “[https://www.thesisterstoc.com/ Touch of Christmas]” [https://www.greekevents.ca/details.php?eventid=1183&eventsubject=Touch%20of%20Christmas%20Sale sales days] in the late autumn of the year.

The [https://www.youtube.com/@thesisterstouchofchristmas Sisters' Touch of Christmas] is an exclusive, fundraising, seasonal Christmas store featuring one-of-a-kind, hand painted ornaments by The Sisters. In addition to festive, gourmet, holiday bakery, the store is adorned with beautiful wreaths, garlands, illuminated décor, seasonal linens, nativities, timeless Christmas keepsakes, and a large assortment of ornaments.

The monastery is open to visitors daily from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Appropriate and modest dress is required.
